The Bernese Oberland and the Jungfrau region
The Bernese Oberland is the part of the Swiss Alps that most first-time visitors picture: lakes in the valley, villages on the slopes and glaciers above. Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are the three gateways to the Jungfrau region. The lakes and the high mountains are two different kinds of excursion, so plan them separately. The region belongs to the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage area, listed in 2001 and extended in 2007. Neighbouring Valais, with Zermatt and the Aletsch area, is a different region and should not be mixed up with the Bernese Oberland.
This page is an overview. It names the main places, gives the fares and times that are published for 2026 and sends you to the detailed guides for each place. All prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).

Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen
Three places, three ways into the mountains.
Interlaken lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and is the base for most trips, as our Interlaken guide explains. Grindelwald is the village for the Eiger Express and the First area, and Lauterbrunnen is the valley and the start of the Wengen route. Each has its own guide: read about Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.
Two guided coach tours visit all three places. The tour from Lucerne starts at the coach park Landenberg on Alpenquai and includes a multilingual guide, the coach and visits to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. Food, drinks and optional activities are extra. The tour from Interlaken starts at the Outdoor shop on Höheweg 95, not at the base shop in Matten, and includes a guide, the coach and stops in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.
Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe
The highest railway station in Europe, at 3,454 m.
The Jungfraujoch offers a view of the Aletsch Glacier, and the Sphinx and the Ice Palace are among the visitor points of the station. The quick route runs from Grindelwald Terminal by Eiger Express to Eigergletscher and on by the Jungfrau railway. The traditional route via Kleine Scheidegg takes about 90 minutes from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg are the rail alternative to the Eiger Express. With the Swiss Travel Pass or the Flex pass you get a 25 % discount from Grindelwald or Wengen, but the trip is not free. For tickets and the station itself, see the Jungfraujoch.
A seat reservation, which costs CHF 10, was compulsory from 1 May to 31 October 2026. If you travel from November, check the current rule with the operator. The quick ascent does not replace acclimatisation: with a headache, dizziness or nausea, go back down.
The guided Jungfraujoch tour from Interlaken starts at Höheweg 95. It includes a multilingual guide, the bus, the Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher, the train tickets to the Jungfraujoch and back to Lauterbrunnen, reserved seats and priority boarding. Access to the Alpine Sensation, the Sphinx terrace, the plateau and the Ice Palace depends on the weather. Meals and drinks are extra.
Schilthorn
A summit at 2,970 m with a change at Mürren and Birg.
The ride to the Schilthorn changes at Mürren and Birg. The revolving restaurant at the top is a separate service. These return fares are valid until 12 December 2026, in CHF. For the mountain and its viewpoints, see the Schilthorn.
| Passenger | Stechelberg to Schilthorn | Mürren to Schilthorn |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | 115.00 | 91.40 |
| Half Fare | 57.50 | 45.70 |
| GA or Swiss Travel Pass | 45.70 | 45.70 |
| Child 6 to 15 years | 57.50 | 45.70 |
| Berner Oberland Pass | 0.00 | 0.00 |
The feeder from Stechelberg to Mürren costs CHF 11.80 single and CHF 23.60 return and is included with the Swiss Travel Pass or the GA, so do not confuse it with the summit section. The Allmendhubel is closed from 19 October to 11 December 2026. The maintenance on the Stechelberg, Gimmelwald and Mürren section ran from 19 to 30 October 2026 and is over. In a storm the operator can restrict or stop service. More about the pass is on our Swiss Travel Pass page.
Waterfalls
Trümmelbach Falls and Staubbachfall near Lauterbrunnen.
The Trümmelbach Falls are ten glacier waterfalls inside the mountain, reached by a tunnel lift. They are open daily from early April to November, from 09:00 to 17:00, and in July and August from 08:30 to 18:00. The start and the end of the season depend on the weather, so check with the operator before you travel. Dogs are not allowed, and neither are babies and small children up to an age of 4 years. Staubbachfall drops above the houses of Lauterbrunnen village. Both are covered by Trümmelbach Falls.
Grindelwald First
A short walk over the edge.
The First Cliff Walk takes about 20 minutes and lies at 2,166 m. Its platform reaches 45 m out into the air. For the cable car and the walks around it, see Grindelwald First. If you would rather walk than ride, our hiking page explains the trail markings and the guided options in the region.
