Swiss Alps from Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva

Swiss Alps from Zurich is the question most travellers ask first: you arrive in the largest city, you have one free day, and the mountains are a coach or train ride away. A Swiss Alps day trip from Zurich can mean a guided Jungfraujoch day, or a coach tour to the villages of the Jungfrau region, which our tours page describes. Lucerne is the starting point for a Titlis tour and for the scenic train to Interlaken, and Geneva has a coach day to a glacier and the Montreux Riviera.

Days like these are long, and the tours differ in what they include. Read the list of inclusions before you book, and plan to pay for food and drinks yourself. All prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).

3,020 mAltitude of the Titlis excursion level above Engelberg

Our picks: Alpine day trips

The Jungfraujoch day from Zurich bundles coach, cable car and train. The Titlis half day suits you if you start in Lucerne, and the Geneva departure combines Glacier 3000 with the Montreux Riviera.

From Zurich

A guided day to the highest railway station in Europe.

The guided Jungfraujoch day tour starts at the Sihlquai bus station, Limmatstrasse 2, in Zurich. It includes a multilingual guide, the bus, the cable car from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher, the train from Eigergletscher to the Jungfraujoch and the train from the Jungfraujoch to Lauterbrunnen. A seat reservation and preferred boarding are part of the tour. Food, drinks and personal expenses are not included. For the station itself, with the Sphinx and the Ice Palace, see the Jungfraujoch.

The station lies at 3,454 m. A seat reservation for the Jungfrau railway, which costs CHF 10, was compulsory from 1 May to 31 October 2026, so check the current rule if you travel from November. The quick ascent does not replace acclimatisation: if you feel a headache, dizziness or nausea, go back down. If you plan to ride on your own instead, look up the connection from Zurich main station to Interlaken Ost on your travel day, because the airport is a different starting point.

From Lucerne

Titlis by coach, or Interlaken by train.

The Titlis half-day tour leaves from the coach park Landenberg on Alpenquai in Lucerne. It includes a multilingual guide, the coach and the aerial cable cars to the summit. The Ice Flyer chairlift, the Cliff Walk, the Glacier Cave and the Glacier Park depend on the weather. Food and drinks are extra. The Rotair cable car is out of service for modernisation from 17 August to 11 December 2026, and the non-revolving TITLIS Connect cable car runs daily as its replacement, so the closure concerns the Rotair, not the summit. From 17 August to 12 December 2026, wheelchairs and pushchairs can travel only as far as Trübsee. From Engelberg the ride to the excursion level at 3,020 m takes about 30 minutes.

If you prefer to travel on your own, the Luzern-Interlaken Express takes about 1 hour 50 minutes and runs hourly. Trains leave Lucerne between 06:06 and 21:06 and Interlaken between 07:04 and 20:04, but check your travel day. You need a normal rail ticket, and the Swiss Travel Pass and the GA are valid. A seat reservation costs CHF 16 up to 1 November 2026 and CHF 12 from 2 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, and it is not compulsory for every traveller. Together the return journey is about 3 hours 40 minutes on the train, and a mountain would come on top, so treat it as a full day rather than a guaranteed combination. For the city and the lake, read about Lucerne and Lake Lucerne. Mount Pilatus rises above the lake and has its own guide: Mount Pilatus.

From Geneva

A coach day to a glacier and the lake shore.

The coach tour from Geneva includes the return trip by coach and an English-speaking driver guide. The cable car from the Col du Pillon valley to Glacier 3000 is included only if you select that option. Free time in Les Diablerets is meant for travellers who skip the cable car, and the tour also leaves free time on the Montreux Riviera. If you want to know more about the lake itself, see Lake Geneva.

Zermatt in the Valais is a separate destination with its own guide: Zermatt.

Coach tour or train on your own

Two ways to spend a day in the mountains.

A coach tour takes the planning off your hands: the guide, the transport and the schedule are set, and you pay once. The price is less flexibility, since you follow the group at each stop. Travelling by train gives you control over the day, and rail tickets and the Swiss Travel Pass cover most of the lines. Our Swiss Travel Pass guide explains what the pass includes, and the Swiss Alps train page lists the main scenic routes. A Supersaver ticket is tied to the train you choose and gives a discount on the full or half-fare price, so it is not a permanent route tariff.

Whatever you choose, check live weather and operating notices on the morning of your trip. The mountain stations sit at very different altitudes, and conditions at the lake can look nothing like conditions at 3,000 m. If you want a base nearer the mountains, the Bernese Oberland guide shows the villages that act as gateways.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Swiss Alps from Zurich in one day?

Yes. A guided Jungfraujoch day tour starts at the Sihlquai bus station in Zurich and includes the cable car, the trains and a seat reservation. Coach tours to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald also start in Zurich. The days are long, so take warm layers.

What happens to the Titlis tour while the Rotair is closed?

The work affects the Rotair cable car only, not the summit. The Rotair is out of service from 17 August to 11 December 2026 for modernisation, and the TITLIS Connect cable car runs daily as the replacement. From 17 August to 12 December 2026, wheelchairs and pushchairs can travel only as far as Trübsee.

Is a seat reservation needed on the Luzern-Interlaken Express?

A reservation is not compulsory for every traveller. It costs CHF 16 up to 1 November 2026 and CHF 12 from 2 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. The Swiss Travel Pass and the GA are valid for the ride.

Is the cable car to Glacier 3000 included in the Geneva tour?

Only if you select the cable car option when you book. Without it, you have free time in Les Diablerets and on the Montreux Riviera.
