Swiss Travel Pass: what it covers
The Swiss Travel Pass gives you unlimited travel by train, bus and boat in Switzerland for the number of days you choose. It is the tool most visitors use to move between the lakes, the cities and the mountains. The pass is not a ticket for every mountain railway: some excursions are included, some get a discount and some follow their own rules. Panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express need a separate seat reservation even with the pass.
The sections below list the prices, the types of pass and the mountain examples. All prices are in Swiss francs (CHF) and are not converted.

The table shows the prices for second and first class, valid until 31 December 2026. Youth passes are for travellers under 25 and should not be combined with another youth discount. Children travelling alone get 50 % off the adult price.

Flex or fixed pass
Consecutive days or days of your choice.
With the Flex pass you pick your travel days within one month, which suits a trip with quiet days in between. A fixed pass suits a trip on which you travel on most days. As the table shows, Flex costs more for the same number of days. If you plan a slow trip with several nights in one place, count your actual travel days before you choose. Our Swiss Alps train page shows the main scenic routes that you could combine.
Mountain railways with the pass
Included, discounted or separate.
Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos are named as excursions included in the pass. Many other mountain railways give only a discount. The Jungfraujoch follows its own rules: from Grindelwald or Wengen the pass gives 25 %, and the trip is not free. At the Titlis, holders of the Half Fare card, the GA or the pass pay 50 % of the pedestrian fare. For the Schilthorn the return from Stechelberg costs CHF 45.70 with the pass. The Gornergrat and the other peaks follow their own fare sheets.
The Glacier Express and the Bernina Express are separate: the seat reservation costs extra even with a pass. Read the details on the Glacier Express page and the Bernina Express page.
Swiss Half Fare Card
A month of reduced fares for visitors.
The Swiss Half Fare Card for visitors costs CHF 150 and is valid for one month. It gives up to 50 % off train, bus, boat and mountain railway fares. You need to live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein and to show your original ID on request. It is not a free network ticket: you still pay half the fare for every ride. Supersaver tickets are bound to the train you select and give a discount on the full or half-fare price, so they are not a permanent route tariff.
Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it
One example, then your own list of trips.
A return trip from Stechelberg to the Schilthorn costs CHF 115 for an adult and CHF 45.70 with the Swiss Travel Pass. The example shows how much the pass can change a single excursion, but not whether a whole trip pays off. Write down the trains, boats and mountain railways you plan, look up each fare and compare the list with the price of the pass and the Half Fare Card. Day trips from a single base are covered on our day trips page.
Museums
What the pass product on the card says.
The Swiss Travel Pass offer on the card above states, in its description, free museum entry together with unlimited travel by train, bus and boat and a mobile or printable e-ticket. Check the list of museums before you plan a visit around it. The description does not promise free cancellation, so look at the booking terms before you buy.
Bernese Oberland Pass
A regional pass with one clear example.
The Berner Oberland Pass is a regional alternative. With it, the return to the Schilthorn costs CHF 0, from Stechelberg and from MΓΌrren. More about the region is in our Bernese Oberland guide. For rides to the Jungfraujoch, there is also the Jungfrau Travel Pass.
