Where to stay in the Swiss Alps: choose by transport
The Swiss Alps are a train destination, so the useful question is not which village looks nicest but which railway or cable car you will use most. Where to stay in the Swiss Alps follows from your plan: Interlaken for the lakes and the access to the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald for the Eiger Express and First, Lauterbrunnen for the valley and the route via Wengen, Zermatt for its mountain railways, and Lucerne for the Zentralbahn and Engelberg.
This is an editorial logic based on transport, not a ranking by quality or price. We name no hotels and quote no room rates, because they change by date. The walking time from your bed to the valley station depends on the exact quarter you choose, so check the map before you book. For the wider region, see the Bernese Oberland guide.

Staying in Interlaken
Between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
Interlaken lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and is the starting point for the Jungfrau region. If your plans mix boat trips, a mountain railway and a day out by train, a base here keeps the options open. Our Interlaken guide covers the lakes, Harder Kulm and the activities in town.
One two-day tour from Zurich is built around an overnight stay. It includes a night in a 3-star hotel in Interlaken or Grindelwald, depending on availability, plus breakfast and the coach from Zurich. The second day goes to the Jungfraujoch with the Eiger Express cable car, the cogwheel train and a reserved seat. The tour is not free to cancel, so check your dates first.
Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen
Grindelwald suits you if you want the Eiger Express and First close by. Lauterbrunnen sits in the valley and is the stop for the route via Wengen. Both have their own detailed guides: read about where to stay in Grindelwald and where to stay in Lauterbrunnen for local detail.
Zermatt
Zermatt is car free, so a base in the village puts you next to its local mountain railways. Cars stop at TΓ€sch, which is why luggage and arrival time matter here. For quarters and options, see where to stay in Zermatt.
Lucerne as a base
Lucerne is a rail starting point in Central Switzerland. The Zentralbahn leaves from here to Engelberg and to Interlaken, which makes the city a practical base if your days alternate between lakes and mountains. For the city and its lake, read about Lucerne. Our day trips guide shows how far a day can stretch from Lucerne, and the getting there guide explains the train from Lucerne to Interlaken.
Sleeping at altitude
Why the height of your bed matters.
Valley villages lie much lower than the summits you can reach by cable car. The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) lists headache, dizziness and nausea as possible symptoms of altitude sickness. Its advice is to ascend slowly, to raise your sleeping altitude only moderately, and to go down if symptoms appear. A fast ride up by railway does not replace acclimatisation, and this page is no medical clearance.
If you want to sleep high in the mountains, see where to stay for the Jungfraujoch. For train connections between your bases, see our Swiss Alps train guide.
