Best Time to Visit the Swiss Alps: Summer, Winter and Seasonal Closures

Best time to visit the Swiss Alps: match the season to your plan

The best time to visit the Swiss Alps varies, because the region covers lakes, valley villages, mountain villages and glacier summits that need different planning. A lake boat trip, a walk to a viewpoint and a ride to a glacier station each have their own season, and many railways and cable cars have pauses for revisions.

The practical approach is to start with what you want to do and then check its season, its closures and its weather. The sections below group the seasons and name the closures that apply in 2026. Today is 1 November 2026, so some dates are already in the past and some are still ahead. For where to base yourself, see our where to stay guide.

Our pick: a lake day pass

The Thun and Brienz day pass fits the warm season, since Lake Brienz is covered only from early April to mid-October.

Summer

Lakes, trails and the high railways.

Summer is the season for boat trips, hiking and the high mountain railways. The Trümmelbach Falls are open daily from early April to November, usually from 09:00 to 17:00 and in July and August from 08:30 to 18:00. The start and end of their season depend on the weather, so check with the operator before you travel.

For hiking, Switzerland Tourism names June to September for one Via Alpina stage. That is an example for one route, not a rule for all high trails. A seat reservation for the Jungfraujoch railway was compulsory from 1 May to 31 October 2026. If you travel from November, check the current rule with the operator. For trail markings and safety, see the hiking guide.

Autumn closures and revisions

What has paused, what is still closed and what has ended.

Glacier Express

The Glacier Express does not run from 11 October to 4 December 2026. The winter timetable runs from 5 December 2026 to 7 May 2027. Read the Glacier Express guide before you plan the route.

Bernina Express

Trains 951 and 952 are diverted via Vereina from 29 October to 13 November 2026. Do not count on the usual Albula sights on those trips. See the Bernina Express guide.

Titlis and Allmendhubel

The Titlis Rotair cable car is out of service from 17 August to 11 December 2026 for modernisation, with a daily replacement called TITLIS Connect. This is not a closure of the summit. From 17 August to 12 December 2026, wheelchairs and pushchairs can travel only as far as Trübsee. The Allmendhubel is closed from 19 October to 11 December 2026. The revision of the section Stechelberg, Gimmelwald and Mürren ran from 19 to 30 October 2026 and is over.

Lakes and Harder Kulm

The Harder Kulm season runs to 29 November 2026. The Lake Brienz boats on the day pass run only from early April to mid October. Service varies by lake and by date, so check the timetable for your date.

Winter

Winter in the Swiss Alps is about ski areas and snowshoe tours. Operation depends on the weather, and the winter timetable of a railway does not show which slopes are open. Read the skiing guide for lift pass prices and avalanche safety. If you go off marked trails, read the avalanche bulletin on the day.

December

Early December is a changeover period. Summer closures end and winter operations start on different dates for each railway and lift, so check each operator rather than assuming one date for the whole region.

Spring

In spring, seasonal attractions start at different dates, and altitude matters. In 2026 the Harder Kulm season started on 3 April, and the Trümmelbach Falls open in early April, weather permitting. Higher railways and cable cars follow their own timetables, so look at them one by one.

Weather by altitude

Why one forecast does not cover the whole trip.

Lake and valley towns, mountain villages, high mountains and glacier destinations need separate planning. Harder Kulm at 1,322 m and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m do not share the same conditions. Climate normals are long-term averages. They describe a typical pattern and are not a forecast for your travel date. This guide therefore gives no monthly figures.

Before each outing, check real-time weather and the operating messages of the railway or cable car you plan to use. Operators may limit or stop service in storms. For arrival and transport, see the getting there guide.
